    A clean null is useful

    The average result did not support the claim that simply having a phone nearby reliably drains cognitive resources. Removing a device is not a magic productivity intervention by itself.

    The actual behavior still matters

    A silent phone on a desk is different from alerts, social feeds, or repeated checking. This paper should narrow the claim, not be used to dismiss distraction research altogether.

Keep your phone nearby for three blocks and in another room for three, while disabling nonessential alerts in both conditions. Record every unplanned check and why it happened. If proximity changes nothing, focus on alerts, expectations, or access friction instead.
