Micro-breaks restore energy, not necessarily performance

    Energy is the reliable win

    The clearest result was better subjective recovery: more vigor and less fatigue. That is valuable even when a break does not make the next hard task measurably faster.

    Hard thinking may need more recovery

    For cognitively demanding tasks, the pooled performance effect was not significant. A five-minute pause should not be sold as a complete reset after prolonged deep work.

    Use the break for a transition

    The practical case for micro-breaks is sustainable pacing. It is more honest to expect restored willingness than a guaranteed productivity spike.

Make micro-breaks part of a humane working rhythm, especially before fatigue compounds. When the next block is genuinely difficult, pair the break with a realistic change of task, a longer recovery window, or a stop point rather than expecting a quick reset to erase overload.

Separate recovery from output

Take one screen-free break of 5–10 minutes after each 60–90 minute block. Record fatigue before and after, then note whether the next block needed a smaller task or a longer reset. Judge the habit by sustainable pacing, not by raw task count.
