The strongest aggregate signal was a modest improvement in reaction time. Treat a walk, ride, or brief session as a way to change state before work, not as a replacement for preparation.

When the analysis narrowed to executive function, working memory and inhibition showed benefits. The result is more specific than a generic claim that exercise makes people smarter.

What this may mean for work.
Use physical activity as a transition into a cognitively demanding block, particularly when you feel inert or mentally scattered. Its likely value is a small, repeatable edge in readiness rather than a reliable burst of insight.

Compare two work starts
Before three planned deep-work sessions, take a brisk, comfortable 15–20 minute walk. Start the other three as usual. Record how long it takes to begin meaningful work and rate focus after 45 minutes; look for a pattern, not a one-off high.
Where the claim stops.
- Most participants were young healthy adults, so results may not generalize broadly.
- The analysis found evidence of publication bias and adjusted for it.
- Laboratory cognitive tasks do not perfectly represent complex creative work.
