What this may mean for work.
For knowledge work, protect sleep around moments when you need to encode something durable: a new skill, a hard decision, a client conversation, or a dense working session. The performance cost may show up later as weaker recall rather than an obvious drop in motivation.

Protect the night after learning
Choose one important learning block each week. Keep the following evening deliberately low-friction and protect your usual sleep window. The next day, write what you can recall before reopening the source; compare it with a week where you did not protect the evening.
Where the claim stops.
- The analysis focuses on memory formation, not every type of work output.
- Sleep-restriction protocols are not identical to everyday interrupted sleep.
- A small average effect can still matter when learning compounds over time.
